My New Blog

Yahoo recently came out with a great article on 10 money saving tips.  These tips are to make your home more energy efficient.  And they are all things you can do yourself and over a weekend.  Here is the List:

  1. Replace your showerhead- install a new WaterSense Showerhead.  It will take you 15 minutes to install.  Let's be honest, you can do it even quicker.  And the cost is anywhere from $10 to $60.  To find out how much water and money you could save in your home with water-saving improvements, use the calculator at EPA.gov.
  2. Add Aerators to your Faucets- They can cost from $2-$10 and be done in 5 minutes. The aerators will reduce the amount of water you are using.
  3. Install a Water Efficient Toilet Bowl- They cost around $200 or more and will take you an hour to install it.  But, lets be honest if you are not educated with this topic you may want to get help or a plumber.
  4. Switch to CFL bulbs- These are those really cool looking light bulbs.  They use 75% less energy then regular light bulbs.  You can install them in 15 minutes per the article.  If it takes your 15mins to change a light bulb, wait I feel a joke coming on.  These bulbs can cost between $2 to $15
  5. Install a Programmable Thermostat- This is genius!!!  Set it for when you need it cooler or warmer, etc.  Your home may already have a programmable thermostat, so maybe you just need to program it.  Per the article it can take 30 minutes to install one and cost up to $250.
  6. Install a Insulated Attic Hatch- Honestly, they lost me on this one.  Maybe you know more then I do, if so please comment on this post.
  7. Stop Chimney drafts-  This one is easy.  They said you can do the "do it yourself version' and place a pillow in a garbage bag and shove it up your chimney.  They point out you will want to tie a rope around it so you don't forget about it when you sue the fireplace next time.  The rope makes it easier to take back out.  Or you can buy a ready made stopper for $55.
  8. Drain Settlement from your Water Heater- If your water heater makes that bubbling noise, it needs to have the settlement removed from it.  Hook a hose to the drain at the bottom and run the house out of a window or into the tub.  This has no cost and sounds like a MUST.  Obviously, without the settlement the water heater will run more efficiently.
  9. Replace your washer hoses- Apparently these hoes can break or bust at any time.  If they do, your house could be flooded with water, causing you damage and costing you a lot of money.  It will cost you between $10-$20 to replace them and you can do it in 15 minutes
  10. Add Window Treatments- The point here is that they will insulate the windows, keeping hot air in and cold air out or vice versa.  There is no way to estimate the cost on this since it is based on your taste in Drapes or Blinds.

I hope you found this list helpful.  You may not think all 10 are feasible, but some seem like "no brainer's".  Start saving some money today.
